Glass Repair Techiniques

For whatever reason, you may have some broken glass that you may decide you want to restore rather than replace. Glass repair can be dangerous. You can get yourself injured, cut or even have splinters go into your eye. If you insist on engaging in such a project, you need to take all precautions necessary to protect yourself from injury.

Have a broom and scoop on standby, get yourself a pair of protective eye glasses and ensure that you are wearing glass resistant safety gloves. There are several techniques to repair glass. You can do it in a way that no one would know it was broken or you can fix it enough for it not to fall apart.

Glue

The simplest way to fix glass is to use glue. It is also messy and doesn’t do much for the glass rather than keeping it together. The surface is still rough and you may still cut your finger if you pass your finger on it. If you are going to try a glass repair using glue, it should be a temporary measure rather than a permanent fix and you should get rid of the offending object as soon as possible to prevent personal injury.

Glass Repair Kits

These are actually inexpensive and mostly used for mirrors. The mirror doesn’t exactly look as good as new but if you are meticulous and take your time with the repair, it is possible that the damages to the mirror can only be seen from close up. The kit includes a cloth for cleaning, a stabilizer, a resin filled syringe to fill the cracks and curing firm. Follow the step by step instructions and once the mirror is set, it is advised that you clean the area and smooth out any excess chemicals from the job.

Scratched Glass

Several things actually work for fixing scratches on glass. They may be time-consuming but definitely worth it if you cannot stand looking at a scratch. A coat of clear nail polish can be used on a scratch; however any excess has to be removed with a remover. If you cover a scratch with regular toothpaste and leave it to dry before cleaning it off, you will see exceptional results and shine.  Vinegar has several uses and if you didn’t know before, it also acts as a scratch remover. You however have to mix it with dry mustard and allow it to dry before wiping it off.

Soldering

When all else fails you can solder your glass. Soldering involves the use of heat to fuse glass together. It doesn’t create the perfect look but once finished the surface is actually smooth and not jagged enough to cut you. If you want to reuse broken glass, this is actually a good idea for you to make a craft or some design. However, be very careful as the iron can burn you. You should have protective eye wear and heat and glass resistant gloves to shield yourself from injury.
